Grauman's Chinese Theatre Hollywood

Grauman's Chinese Theatre is located in the heart of Hollywood California. The 1927 vintage theatre is most famous for it's courtyard, where the stars have placed their foot and hand prints in cement. At one time Grauman's hosted the annual Academy Award ceremonies. Today the Academy Award ceremonies are hosted next door at the new Kodak Theatre. The outdoor courtyard is open 24 hours a day but it is best to visit during the day or early evening. Half-hour guided walking tour of the theatre are now offered Adults are $5 (and kids under 5 are free). Amtrak Pacific Surfliners

Amtrak Pacific Surfliners run along the coast of Southern California from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. These sleek double decker trains whisk you along the coast at speeds up to 80 miles an hour. Riding the surfliner gives you an opportunity to see many scenic areas of the coast not viewable from your automobiles. On a recent trip to San Diego we were traveling along the freeway between San Clemente and Oceanside at 80 miles and hour and the Amtrak passed us by and left us in the dust. The advertised top seed for the Pacific Surfliner is 79 miles an hour but I estimate the train was doing about 90 along that stretch of the track. For a day trip everyone can enjoy including the driver consider taking the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner next time.

J. Paul Getty Center Los Angeles Day Trip

The Getty Center is located on a hill overlooking West Los Angeles. Parking is 8 dollars, admission is free. A tram takes you tot the top of the hill, which is a good place to get yourself a map and plan what you want to see. The museum is divided into 4 buildings that can be visited in the order of your preference. The Getty center has lots of interesting things to do for both adults and kids. A visit will take up most of your day so pack a lunch unless you plan on eating at one of the two restaurants at the museum. The Getty Center is a must see for anyone contemplating a trip to the Los Angeles area.

California Science Center Los Angeles

Enjoy a low cost day with the kids at the California Science Center. The California Science Center is really a neat place to go for the whole family. They have many interesting exhibits available that are both fun and educational for kids and adults. One of the most exciting things to do ( for a small charge) is to ride the high wire bicycle three floors above the main hall. The science center also has the IMAX theater where you can watch movies about other science topics.

Jalama Beach if off the beaten path but not necessarily quite and secluded. Summer time campers line up early to get one of the 110 beach front campsites. Even if your not lucky enough to snag a campsite Jalama Beach is a great day trip destination. The 14 mile drive down Jalama road is almost as scenic as Jalama Beach. El Capitan Beach offers swimming, fishing, surfing, picnicking and camping. A stairway provides access from the bluffs to the beach area. A bike trail connects the park with Refugio State Beach, 2.5 miles away. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Quite hours are from 10 pm to 6 am. Check out time is noon. Each campsite can have up to eight persons. All the campsites have fire pits and tables. El Capitan Beach is perfect for family's looking for a beach camping adventure or to escape form the city for a day.
