Free Things to Do Southern California

Southern California has many free and low cost places to visit. Everyone is on a tight budget these days and the cost of taking a family to a major Southern California attraction can be in the hundreds of dollars. Here is a great list of Southern California destinations that will only cost the price of filling up your gas tank. Most of these places have free admission or are very low cost. Bring along a picnic lunch to save even more. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars to have fun day in Southern California. The most memorable part of your trip will be how much fun you had for free.

Point Dume Nature Preserve
Point Dume Nature Preserve is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year. Point Dume is one of Southern California’s most scenic coastal destinations. Point Dume is about an 18 miles north of Santa Monica. The drive takes you along the Malibu coast past ocean front homes and numerous public beaches.

Point Dume Nature Preserve is 32 acres of pristine ocean front land which you can access from several hiking trails. Take the main tail to the summit or hike down the steps to a secluded beach (Pirates Cove) . Please stay on the trail this is a protected nature preserve. Keep a close watch on children there are steep drop offs to the ocean below.

There is a viewing platform along the boardwalk trail just below the summit where you can sit and enjoy the million dollar view. Parking is at a premium, do not park on local streets, they are a no parking zone.

Directions: From Santa Monica follow Pacific Coast Highway 18-miles west to Westward Beach Road. Turn toward the ocean, go past the gate (pay parking fee) to the very end of the road. A trail leads you to the Point Dume Preserve.

A smaller free parking area is on top of the bluff along Cliffside Drive. There are only about 15 parking spots so it's a matter of luck if you get one unless you go early in the day.

All the surrounding streets are no parking and they do give out tickets.
Point Dume Preserve is located off Pacific Coast Highway at the end of Westward Beach Road, Malibu California. The drive from Santa Monica will take about 45 minutes.
