South Coast Railroad Museum located in Goleta California is just a few miles north of Santa Barbara. The 1901 Southern Pacific Railroad Depot was originally located about two miles west of it's present location. Boarded-up and closed in 1973 Goleta Beautiful, took up the task of saving this historic landmark. In late1981, sufficient money had been raised to allow the moving the building two miles to East Lake Los Carneros County Park. The miniature train and handcar rides are the South Coast Railroad Museum's most popular visitor attractions. The Goleta Short Line miniature train ride operates year-around -- weekends from 1:15 to 3:45 pm and Wednesdays and Fridays from 2 to 3:45 pm. There are 3-4 departures per hour. The miniature train is also available for birthdays.
Free handcar rides are offered on the third Saturday of the every month, 1-3:50 p.m. The handcar also operates during most museum special events. On other days, visitors may also request a private ride on the handcar, for which there will be a small fee. On Jan. 18, 2002, Goleta Depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The building is also listed on the California Register of Historical Resources and is a Santa Barbara County Historical Landmark (No. 22).
