If you’re looking for a destination that combines all the action of an amusement park with the beauty of an ocean paradise, then Mission Bay should definitely be on your list of places to visit in sunny Southern California.

Mission Bay San Diego is located minutes from downtown San Diego, Pacific Beach and the majestic bluffs and caves of La Jolla. Mission Bay is a 4000-acre manmade aquatic park developed from a tidal marsh where the San Diego River drains into the Pacific Ocean.

The area has 27 miles of sandy beaches where swimmers and sunbathers can take advantage of the warm water, calm surf conditions and the most pleasant weather in the country.

Whether it's day camping on Fiesta Island, observing the many species of birds, fish, and other animals at the Crown Point Nature Reserve, walking or riding along the many miles of bike paths skirting the bay, or simply picnicking in the park, visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities for all ages.

Mission Bay is close to several major San Diego area attractions and is adjacent to Sea World San Diego, the animal theme park that attracts many visitors to San Diego every year. The entire family can spend the day watching whales, dolphins and many other sea creatures put on a show you won't soon forget.

Another family friendly attraction located within a short walk of the bay is Belmont Park, a historic oceanfront amusement park that features the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster and several other classic and modern carnival rides. The park was opened on July 4, 1925 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you prefer something a bit more organic, you’re in luck. Right next-door is Pacific Beach, an area that is especially popular with young people who love the easy access to a vibrant nightlife, trendy shops and numerous restaurants. Of course the main attraction is the beach, which stretches all the way from La Jolla on the north to the southern border of Mission Bay Park.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational activities including water skiing, jet skiing, kayaking, sailing, or a bike ride along the beach path, stopping along the way to rest and soak in the views of the Pacific Ocean. Bike and watercraft rentals are available in Pacific Beach as well as a few of the surrounding hotels.

For those that want to take in the area’s many historic and cultural attractions, Old Town also is no more than a five-minute drive and it's there that you'll find the flavor of Mexico more than any other place in San Diego. Historic buildings and museums help tell the story of early settlers to the region and some of San Diego's best Mexican restaurants help you get a true taste of the culture.

Another three miles south is the San Diego waterfront, where you can enjoy such attractions as Seaport Village, with its unique shops and excellent selection of restaurants, which features both inside and outside dining overlooking the bay. You'll also want to stroll along the waterfront stopping to watch the occasional street performer.

Finally, for the nautical buff, there is a treasure trove of sea fairing antiquities and points of interest. The USS Midway is a floating museum and tribute to the people who have fought our wars on board this huge vessel. Guests are allowed almost free run of the ship and you'll see every nook and cranny as you climb up and down the decks. Nearby is the Maritime Museum, the Stars and Stripes --winner of the America's Cup -- and the world's oldest active sailing ship, the Star of India.

There are six resort style lodging accommodations on Mission Bay, all with the feel of a true luxury tropical island resort, with towering palm trees and a colorful landscapes that let you relax or escape for that perfect California dreaming.

To reach Mission Bay from the north or south, take Interstate 5 to the exit for East Mission Bay Drive, Grand Avenue, Clairemont Drive, or Sea World Drive.
