Most recently a hit movie starring Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp, "Into the Woods" began as a live musical that took Broadway by storm. A fresh spin on several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, this production by Sierra College Foundation at Dietrich Theater skillfully interweaves several classic fairy tales into one epic story that shows what happens when things get real in the fairy-tale world. Unable to bear children, a baker and his wife are lured into completing a number of tasks by a witch who promises to grant them their wish if they're successful. During their journey, they encounter Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk. All the storybook characters discover that wishes come with a steep price. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, the original Broadway run won critical praise and numerous awards. The cast recording, which includes "Children Will Listen," "Giants in the Sky" and "No One Is Alone," took home a Grammy. [less-]

It's 17th-century Ireland, and Oliver Cromwell is bringing down the hammer on Irish and Scottish Catholics. With neighbor pitted against neighbor, English landowner Robert Preston suddenly finds himself standing in opposition to his beloved Irish wife, Madeleine. Determined to save an Irish serving girl who's been snatched to be sold into slavery in America, Madeleine sets out on her own, abandoned to her fate by the man she loves, who's caught between the comforts of his position as a landowner and his love for his family. Presented at Sacramento's Ovation Stage, "The Clearing" is a story of romance, passion and treachery that cleverly tackles issues of morality -- as well as the historical roots of the Troubles and modern-day ethnic cleansing -- within the context of a gripping family drama. Hailed as "one of the most important historical plays about America to ever reach the stage" by "The New York Times", playwright Mark St. Germain's powerful drama reveals a universal truth: that all people, no matter their differences, are capable of change. Amidst their incendiary words of prejudice and fear, Ann, a civil rights activist, and C.P., an Exalted Cyclops of the KKK, forge an unlikely friendship based in mutual respect and trust in North Carolina circa 1971. Inspired by Osha Gray Davidson's acclaimed 2007 book of the same name and based on a remarkable true story, "Best of Enemies" in a modern-day parable of transformation and triumph for civil rights. James Wheatley directs this Celebration Arts production of the potent play about school desegregation and unexpected solidarity. [less-]

The Falcon's Eye Theatre closes out their eight season at The Harris Center for the Arts with a performance of Caryl Churchill's "Cloud Nine". Colonial and sexual oppression are the key themes of this award-winning play that jumps between the 1880s and the 1970s. Power politics and sexual attitudes in these two very different eras are connected through Churchill's hilarious script with a viciously sharp bite. This surreal comedy follows an English family from their life in colonial Africa during the Victorian era to their life in late twentieth century London. For the characters, however, only 25 years passes between the two time periods, creating an explosive tension between their expectations and their reality upon returning to London. [less-]

For 160 years, the fair has been the yearly culmination of entertainment, fascinating exhibits, popular livestock venues, over-the-top thrill rides and calorie-packed food.

Also held at the Cal Expo fairgrounds are the annual Sacramento Independence Day and Oktoberfest Celebrations.

Highlighted by the largest-scale pyrotechnics display the state, the Independence Day Celebration is a family oriented collection of activities focused around our Nation’s birthday, while Oktoberfest features authentic German food, contests, games, live music and dancing, and Volkz Brau — a custom-brewed ale made specifically for this event.

Other ethnicities are also celebrated around Sacramento during the annual Ukrainian Festival, and Brazilian Independence Day, which is an amazing free festival demonstrating Brazil’s colorful culture.

For those interested in the arts, Sacramento has plenty of events scattered throughout the year, starting with the Chalk It Up! to Sacramento Art & Music Festival.

Held over Labor Day Weekend at Fremont Park, the three-day event draws over an average of 30,000 and features more than 200 artists creating chalk art on the sidewalks of downtown Sacramento. There is also live music, hands-on art activities for children and more.

Also held downtown and just shortly after Labor Day, is the annual Capital Artists’ Studio Tour at Verge Center for the Arts. The tour is one of the only times when artists open their studios to the public, offering a unique experience to all.

The first weekend of the event features open studios in Downtown, Midtown, Land Park and West Sac, followed on the second weekend by the studios in East Sac, Arden, Tahoe Park, Carmichael and Fair Oaks.

Good food and drink are enjoyed by all, and there are several annual events celebrating Sacramento’s farming and food tradition, including the Farm-to-Fork Festival and Capitol Beer Fest.

Designed to demonstrate where our food and drinks come from, the Farm-to-Fork Festival is a free event where attendees will find food, wine and beer from regional eateries, as well as live music, cooking demonstrations, a kids’ zone, interactive booths from local grocers, farms and ranches and more.

The Capitol Beer Fest is held each March, and closes out Sacramento Beer Week at downtown’s beautiful Capitol Mall. This annual event in features over 100 craft breweries, serving over 300 different varieties of high quality craft beer, including Sacramento-area breweries.

Finally, visitors should get ready to turn back time to the 1850s, during the Sacramento’s Gold Rush Days over Labor Day Weekend.
