Deep in the heart of the capital, a murderous political intrigue unfolds as the Sacramento Theatre Company stages "Julius Caesar", the Shakespeare "history play" that remains intensely relevant to contemporary audiences. More scandalous than "Scandal" and more devious than "House of Cards", "Julius Caesar" finds its title character locked in a life-and-death struggle for power with his former "friends, Romans, countrymen," Brutus, Casca and Cassius. But in this staging of the play, Cassius and Casca will be played by women and the whole production will be set in a hypothetical near-future America. The actions of these friends-turned-conspirators set off a civil war at the dawn of the Roman Empire in the original telling, and in this modern version you'll get to see what happens when celebrity and politics are blurred and money matters more than policy. Perhaps most popularly known as the inspiration for the musical "My Fair Lady", George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion" comes to FreeFall Stage in Sacramento. This classic satire is a brilliant attack on inequality amongst the classes and the sexes. On a bet, phoneticist Henry Higgins sets out to transform Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl, into a society lady, but doesn't count on his "creation" having a mind of her own. This witty tale from the master playwright delighted and scandalized its first audience in 1912 and remains as relevant as ever today. To add an extra bit of fun and romance, the special Valentine's Day performance includes a dessert bar featuring a variety of yummy treats, apple cider and coffee -- all set in a candlelit, café-style setting. "A Flea in Her Ear" brings together a salacious and scheming cast of characters at the Hotel Coq D'Or with uproarious results. This classic bedroom farce was originally written in 1907 by Georges Feydeau, at the height of the Belle Époque era, but its bawdy humor and hilarious plot twists have kept it alive and on the stage for over a hundred years, delighting audiences again and again. The madcap plot is kicked off by a wife who sends a note from an non-existent admirer to her husband to test his fidelity, but the letter delivers nothing but laughs when it somehow ends up in the wrong hands. Revel in the mistaken identities and misplaced jealousies when "A Flea in Her Ear" flies into the Woodland Opera House. [less-]

Marc Blitzstein's musical "The Cradle will Rock", coming to the stage at the Performing Arts Center Auditorium at Sacramento City College, is so timely and applicable to today's political situation that you'd never know it was originally staged over 75 years ago. The year is 1937, and corporations and churches are using their influence to shape laws. Unemployment is skyrocketing and millions of Americans are losing their homes. This musical was originally considered so scandalous that the U.S. government tried to shut it down. Rarely performed these days, "The Cradle Will Rock" features a 30-member cast and a live five-member band. [less-]

Legendary Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim is at his bloody best in "Sweeney Todd", his macabre masterpiece about a barbaric barber and the beastly baker he befriends. Now you can experience the Tony-winning score, which "The New York Times" called "Sondheim's most ravishing," in this production from Davis Musical Theatre Company. Set in 19th-century London, the musical tells the tale of a barber on a quest for revenge, who teams up with local pie shop proprietress Mrs. Lovett to slit the throats of customers and destroy the evidence by baking the bodies into pies. A perennial favorite since it premiered in 1979, the darkly comical "Sweeney Todd" is equal parts haunting and hilarious. [less-]

For 160 years, the fair has been the yearly culmination of entertainment, fascinating exhibits, popular livestock venues, over-the-top thrill rides and calorie-packed food.

Also held at the Cal Expo fairgrounds are the annual Sacramento Independence Day and Oktoberfest Celebrations.

Highlighted by the largest-scale pyrotechnics display the state, the Independence Day Celebration is a family oriented collection of activities focused around our Nation’s birthday, while Oktoberfest features authentic German food, contests, games, live music and dancing, and Volkz Brau — a custom-brewed ale made specifically for this event.

Other ethnicities are also celebrated around Sacramento during the annual Ukrainian Festival, and Brazilian Independence Day, which is an amazing free festival demonstrating Brazil’s colorful culture.

GARD Pro Skipped due to post being on 'Do Not Show' list.

For those interested in the arts, Sacramento has plenty of events scattered throughout the year, starting with the Chalk It Up! to Sacramento Art & Music Festival.

Held over Labor Day Weekend at Fremont Park, the three-day event draws over an average of 30,000 and features more than 200 artists creating chalk art on the sidewalks of downtown Sacramento. There is also live music, hands-on art activities for children and more.

Also held downtown and just shortly after Labor Day, is the annual Capital Artists’ Studio Tour at Verge Center for the Arts. The tour is one of the only times when artists open their studios to the public, offering a unique experience to all.

The first weekend of the event features open studios in Downtown, Midtown, Land Park and West Sac, followed on the second weekend by the studios in East Sac, Arden, Tahoe Park, Carmichael and Fair Oaks.

Good food and drink are enjoyed by all, and there are several annual events celebrating Sacramento’s farming and food tradition, including the Farm-to-Fork Festival and Capitol Beer Fest.

Designed to demonstrate where our food and drinks come from, the Farm-to-Fork Festival is a free event where attendees will find food, wine and beer from regional eateries, as well as live music, cooking demonstrations, a kids’ zone, interactive booths from local grocers, farms and ranches and more.

The Capitol Beer Fest is held each March, and closes out Sacramento Beer Week at downtown’s beautiful Capitol Mall. This annual event in features over 100 craft breweries, serving over 300 different varieties of high quality craft beer, including Sacramento-area breweries.

Finally, visitors should get ready to turn back time to the 1850s, during the Sacramento’s Gold Rush Days over Labor Day Weekend.
