Set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City and featuring an all-female cast, this production of one of Shakespeare's greatest romantic comedies is not to be missed. "As You Like It" boasts one of Shakespeare's most vibrant heroines in Rosalind, the beautiful daughter of an exiled duke. When she's banished from the duke's court after falling in love with the dashing Orlando, Rosalind disguises herself as a boy and flees the city. Once away, Rosalind and the other motley characters busy themselves with music, dancing and pure romance, encountering comic twists and turns on a merry romp toward an eventual happy ending. Through mischievous misunderstandings, pleasing poetry and hilarious happenstance, this production of "As You Like It" at William A. Carroll Amphitheatre in Sacramento shows that the forces of romance and justice can make an out-of-kilter world right again. [less-]

With a stunning score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and the famed lyrics of Tim Rice, the compelling true story of Argentina's dynamic former first lady, Eva Perón, comes to life in "Evita". Filled with stunning showstoppers like "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall," the musical follows a small-town peasant girl as she uses her considerable smarts to rise from the slums of Argentina. Driven by ambition and blessed with charisma, she became a starlet at 22, the president's mistress at 24, First Lady at 27, and died at 33. Beloved by the working class and reviled by the military and aristocracy, Eva Peron left a political legacy that shines on to this day. With its compelling score that fuses haunting chorales with exuberant Latin, pop and jazz influences, this Davis Musical Theatre Company production of "Evita" creates an arresting theatrical portrait as complex as the woman herself. A rock musical about the devastating toll that mental illness takes on a contemporary suburban family, "Next to Normal" has become one of Broadway's biggest and most compelling hits in recent years. This riveting show nabbed three Tony Awards in 2009 and the Pulitzer Prize for its heartbreaking, humorous and unflinchingly authentic look at a seemingly normal modern family struggling with the effects of bipolar disorder. Each character's journey is further punctuated by powerful music scored by Tom Kitt ("American Idiot"). Featuring 30 original songs, including "Just Another Day," "You Don't Know" and "Superboy and the Invisible Girl," "Next to Normal" is, in the words of "The New York Times", "much more than a feel-good musical; it is a feel-everything musical." See it this summer at the Black Box Theatre at West Sacramento Community Center. [less-]

It takes more than wearing black to "be" The Man in Black. But James Garner's soaked-in-bourbon baritone, soulful eyes and hard-won swagger all pay tribute to Johnny Cash in a way that simply astonishes. When Garner sings "Ring of Fire" or "Folsom Prison Blues" you can hear the crunch of Cash's gravelly voice and feel the rebellious spirit of the artist who forever changed not only country music, but folk, rock and pop. Backed by a live band that would have felt right at home at Sun Records or on the Opry stage, Garner replicates the same "boom-chicka-boom" sound pioneered by Cash, Luther Perkins, Marshall Grant and W.S. Holland. Hear hits like "I Walk the Line," "A Boy Named Sue" and "The Man Comes Around" live at Harlow's Restaurant & Nightclub. [less-]

For 160 years, the fair has been the yearly culmination of entertainment, fascinating exhibits, popular livestock venues, over-the-top thrill rides and calorie-packed food.

Also held at the Cal Expo fairgrounds are the annual Sacramento Independence Day and Oktoberfest Celebrations.

Highlighted by the largest-scale pyrotechnics display the state, the Independence Day Celebration is a family oriented collection of activities focused around our Nation’s birthday, while Oktoberfest features authentic German food, contests, games, live music and dancing, and Volkz Brau — a custom-brewed ale made specifically for this event.

Other ethnicities are also celebrated around Sacramento during the annual Ukrainian Festival, and Brazilian Independence Day, which is an amazing free festival demonstrating Brazil’s colorful culture.

For those interested in the arts, Sacramento has plenty of events scattered throughout the year, starting with the Chalk It Up! to Sacramento Art & Music Festival.

Held over Labor Day Weekend at Fremont Park, the three-day event draws over an average of 30,000 and features more than 200 artists creating chalk art on the sidewalks of downtown Sacramento. There is also live music, hands-on art activities for children and more.

Also held downtown and just shortly after Labor Day, is the annual Capital Artists’ Studio Tour at Verge Center for the Arts. The tour is one of the only times when artists open their studios to the public, offering a unique experience to all.

The first weekend of the event features open studios in Downtown, Midtown, Land Park and West Sac, followed on the second weekend by the studios in East Sac, Arden, Tahoe Park, Carmichael and Fair Oaks.

Good food and drink are enjoyed by all, and there are several annual events celebrating Sacramento’s farming and food tradition, including the Farm-to-Fork Festival and Capitol Beer Fest.

Designed to demonstrate where our food and drinks come from, the Farm-to-Fork Festival is a free event where attendees will find food, wine and beer from regional eateries, as well as live music, cooking demonstrations, a kids’ zone, interactive booths from local grocers, farms and ranches and more.

The Capitol Beer Fest is held each March, and closes out Sacramento Beer Week at downtown’s beautiful Capitol Mall. This annual event in features over 100 craft breweries, serving over 300 different varieties of high quality craft beer, including Sacramento-area breweries.

Finally, visitors should get ready to turn back time to the 1850s, during the Sacramento’s Gold Rush Days over Labor Day Weekend.
