Peter Strauss Ranch Enchanto Amusement Park

Divider
Peter Strauss Ranch as the implies was once owned by Peter Strauss. The actor lived at the ranch until 1983, when he sold it to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. In 1987 The National Park Service purchased the ranch and now operates the park.

During the 1930s way before there was ever a Disneyland the property was used as a resort called Shoson. The park had the largest swimming pool west of the rockies, a huge dance floor and amusement park rides. After a dam was built across Triunfo creek creating Lake Enchanto the early theme park was renamed Enchanto.

Operation of Enchanto continued until the early 1960s when is closed. A flood had washed out the dam, Enchanto's ride were old and outdated and by this time Disneyland had been built in Anaheim.

There were some plans to rebuild the resort into a huge theme park but they were never realized. The never built amusuement park was to be called "Famous Places -- Cornell World." The name was taken from the nearby town that at the time was called Cornell.

Not much of the original theme park remains today. The pool is filled in, Lake Enchanto is no more, about only thing left from the early days is the bath house.

Visitors to Peter Strauss Ranch enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery in the Santa Monica Mountains. There are several hiking trails to explore and the original ranch house is still on the property.

This section of Mulholland Highway is called "The Three Magical Miles" a historically rich area of the Malibu mountains that covers a three mile radius around Malibou Lake.

Just across Mulholland Hwy from the ranch is the Cornell Winery where you can taste local wines and dine in the historic Old Place restaurant. Enjoy a perfect day exploring the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains

This enchanting oak woodland has long been a source of dreams, visions, and memories. Inhabited for thousands of years by the Chumash people, this area became part of Rancho Las Virgenes after Spanish colonization.

The original coast live oak, used as the marker in the 1881 land grant survey, still stands just west of the swimming pool. The upside-down letter “T” is still evident in the bark. The Peter Strauss Ranch Park is noted for extensive its California oak woodlands laced with walking paths and hiking trails.

Recreational facilities include a swimming pool and the Lake Enchanto Dam. It also contains a stone ranch house with a terrazzo patio available for outdoor social events, including concerts, weddings, picnics, and art exhibits.
