Quarter. The old-fashioned gas lamps begin to glow and
the more than 70 sidewalk cafes come to life.
Gaslamp Quarter is more of a night time place to visit
but it's defiantly worth taking a look at even if its
during the day. If your on a San Diego weekend getaway
this is a great place for dinning and entertainment. Nearby
you can find Westfield
Horton Plaza a huge four story shopping center with
even more places to eat.
Close
to the Gaslamp Quarter is the USS Midway Museum and up
the hill is Balboa Park home of the the world famous San
Diego Zoo. With so many things to
see and do in San Diego a Go
Card is a great way to save
on all the attractions.
San Diego is a great place for a
mini vacation and is only about a hundred miles from Los
Angeles. If

San Diego Gaslamp Quarter |
In
1976 the City of San Diego adopted a Planned District Ordinance
for the Gas lamp Quarter, establishing design and use guidelines
for the redevelopment of the Gas lamp as a National Historic
District. During this time of restoration enough architecture
was preserved for the Gas lamp Quarter to receive national
recognition and in 1980 the entire district was placed on
the National Register of Historic Places.
The San Diego Gas lamp Quarter extends from Broadway to
Harbor Drive, and from 4th to 6th Avenue, covering 16 1/2
blocks. It includes 94 historic buildings, most of which
were constructed in the Victorian Era, and are still in
use with active tenants including restaurants, shops and
clubs. Day time check out the district's
historic buildings, many restored to their original grandeur.
At one time the district was not quite the same law abiding
area it is today. From the the late 1880s through 1920 numerous
gambling halls, saloons and brothels were the norm. Up until
the mid 1970s the district was a run down place with small
hotels and bars the average person would not be caught dead
in.
In 1976 things began to change and today the San Diego Gas
lamp Quarter is a major travel destination for locals and
tourists. The historic district is great place to people
watch and enjoy the sights and sounds of San Diego.

The
Gaslamp Quarter draws a cosmopolitan populace to its streets.
While the Quarter is largely devoid of sky scrapers, and
instead has high rise buildings, the architecture is sophisticated
and reflects a period of Victorian-style development in
the city.
The name sake of the Quarter, gas lamps line the streets
of the Quarter on all blocks of the area. The abundance
of dining venues reveals international aspects of the city
that provide people with a variety of dining options reflecting
global cuisine.
Shopping venues abound in the Quarter. While numerous clothing
stores occupy storefront locations in the Quarter, adjacent
Horton Plaza is the larger shopping center accommodating
numerous stores.
The San Diego Gaslamp Quater is eight blocks long (from
Broadway to Harbor Drive) and two blocks wide (from Fourth
to Sixth Avenues). There is parking in nearby parking lots
and garages. Metered spots are Free on Sunday. |
