San
Onofre State Beach consists of 3,000 acres of Southern California
coastline between San Clemente and Camp Pendleton. The park
includes three individual areas: San Onofre Bluffs, San
Onofre Surf Beach, and San Mateo Campground.
The surf beach is day use only but lets you park your car
of RV right next to the beach along a rather bumpy dirt
road. During the summer arrive at surf beach early parking
is limited. Day use and camping is available along the San
Onofre Bluffs.
There are six trails down to the beach from Old Highway
101. Trail number six leads to a secluded beach which is
frequented by nudists so expect to find sunbathers in their
natural state.
San Onofre State Beach has about fours miles of beach to
explore at San Onofre perfect for a Southern California
.day trip or weekend beach camping adventure. Camping reservations
can be made up to seven months in advance through Reserve
America.
San Mateo Campground is a short trip inland from the sandy
beach. A 1.5-mile trail connects the campground to Trestles
Beach, a world class surfing site. San Mateo Creek flows
just east of the campground outward towards the ocean creating
key riparian and wetland habitats which host some rare and
even endangered species.
All campsites
include a fire pit and picnic table.At the San Mateo Campground
the Hook Up sites have electricity and water only, no sewer.
There are 302 bluff top and San Mateo campsites which can
be reserved the rest are first come first serve.San Onofre
Bluffs and San Onofre Surf Beach are located south of San
Clemente on I-5 (Exit Basilone Road)
San Onofre - San Mateo Campground is located on the outer
edge of San Clemente 1 mile inland from I-5 (Exit Cristianitos)
