Home to some of California’s best wineries, the small rural town of Atascadero in San Luis Obispo County, California, is a hidden gem you don’t want to miss. With its combination of rolling hillsides studded with oaks and expansive vistas, Atascadero offers a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere that focuses on preserving open spaces. Centrally located, Atascadero is a short drive from Morro Bay, Paso Robles wine country, and the city of San Luis Obispo. It’s ideal for exploring the Central Coast. Here’s a guide to Atascadero’s points of interest.
Central Coast Zoo & Lake Park
Visitors can explore various open spaces and attractions outside the colony district. A popular destination is the Lake Park Complex, which includes the Zoo and the Veterans Memorial Tribute. Located on Highway 41, the park offers a variety of outdoor activities. Paddleboats and kayaks are available for rent during the summer. Right next door is the zoo, founded in 1955 by Charles Paddock, a park ranger who came to the aid of injured wildlife. The zoo is open daily, and admission costs are modest.
Downtown Atascadero
Over the years, the downtown district has undergone significant transformation. Today, it is commonly referred to as the Colony District, which comprises business owners and volunteers dedicated to shaping the area into a historical and economic center. Recent downtown enhancements improved parking, safety, and aesthetics along El Camino Real.
Historic City Hall
An Italian Renaissance-style building that houses Atascadero City Hall, the museum is one of California’s Historical Landmarks, designated as Number 958. During its restoration, many of the museum’s artifacts have been relocated to the Historical Society Colony House, situated in the heart of the downtown district, across the street from the City Administration Building.
Carlton Hotel Atascadero
Among the Atascadero downtown district projects is the Carlton Hotel, which has been refurbished into one of the most iconic structures in the area. Originally named The Annex, this luxury hotel has attracted visitors between Los Angeles and San Francisco since the 1930s. Personalities such as Bette Davis, Jack Benny, and Ralph Bellamy regularly stayed here while visiting the Central Coast. The hotel is now at the pinnacle of extravagance, with 52 guest rooms and all the amenities.
Santa Margarita Ranch
Located just three miles from Atascadero, the historic Santa Margarita Ranch boasts a large rustic barn commonly used for weddings and various events. The ranch also features a narrow-gauge steam train that pulls original Disneyland passenger cars along a two-mile loop track. The Pacific Coast Railroad, a privately owned narrow-gauge railroad, is not open to the public. The train operates during weddings, film shoots, and special events. Notably, the ranch and railroad were highlighted on ABC’s Bachelor Pad show. 9000 Yerba Buena, Santa Margarita. Website.
