Explore Laguna Niguel Regional Park in Orange County, a 227-acre park with a 44-acre fishing lake, picnic areas, playgrounds, hiking trails, pickleball and tennis courts, and a model glider field. Great for family outings, picnics, and outdoor fun. You can fish, fly a model glider, play pickleball, or let kids play on the playgrounds. The park offers many ways to have a fun family outing in a lovely setting.
Park History and Development
This land was once part of the old Rancho Niguel Mexican land grant. The county bought the first acres in 1970, and the park opened in 1973. In the 1980s, more features were added, like picnic shelters, bridges, an amphitheater, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and Kite Hill for model gliders. Today, the park continues to improve, with new additions and activities.
Top Things to Do: Picnicking to Group Gatherings
The park has plenty of picnic spots with shelters, tables, barbecue grills, sinks, and outlets. Most are first-come, first-served, but you can reserve bigger group shelters through OC Parks. Shaded lawns and ocean breezes make it a great place for family barbecues or company gatherings.

As of November 1, 2015, fishing is free at Niguel Lake. The parks service has taken over the fishing operations. Anglers 16 years and over are required to have a fishing license.
Shore fishing is now the only activity allowed. No more boat rentals. If and when a vendor is found to take over concessions at the lake boat rentals may be offered.
OC Parks is scheduled to stock fish in the lake but don’t count on any huge trout like the ones stocked by Rick Mendoza who ran the fishing operations for the last twenty years.
