San Diego Zoo Safari Park offers an authentic African safari adventure, a short drive from downtown San Diego. Safari Park has 1800-plus acres of exotic animals and botanical gardens carved out of the picturesque San Pasqual Valley’s hills and canyons outside Escondido, California. No safari park or zoo in the country is as advanced in endangered research and development as the San Diego Zoo, and Safari Park is an extension of that commitment. Here is what to expect while visiting the Safari Park.
Like any great expedition, you will need a good map, and you can grab a park guide upon arrival. You’ll want to keep this handy as it contains services, shows, shopping, and dining information. Plan for a full-day visit—most guests spend 4-6 hours or more, especially if booking safaris or interactive activities. The park is open every day of the year, rain or shine, including holidays. We recommend starting your visit with a ride on the tram, followed by exploring the walkways and a safari.
Safari Park Attractions and Exhibits:
Africa Tram Safari: A must-do open-air tram ride (included with admission; reservations recommended for $15 extra during peaks) through 1,800 acres of savanna, spotting giraffes, rhinos, and herds of antelope. Runs continuously; priority access for disabilities. Tip: Try to sit on the left side of the tram to get the best view of the animals.
Safaris Upgrades
Classic Safari is a guided truck tour into restricted habitats. Behind-the-Scenes Safaris: Ultimate Adventure ($700/group) for feeding rhinos or meeting cheetahs.
Adventure Activities: Zipline Safari, Jungle Ropes aerial obstacle course, or hot-air Balloon Safari (sunrise views, $150+).
Shows and Talks: Enjoy daily animal presentations, such as Birds of the World (falconry demos) or cheetah runs. Check the app for times, which are mostly mornings when animals are most active.
Walkabout Areas: Explore Tiger Trail (new tigers, leopards, and a ropes course), Lion Camp (lions and African wild dogs), and the Walkabout Australia (kangaroos and wallabies you can walk among).
Interpretive Walkways:
Heart of Africa walkway winds through lush landscapes, bringing you face-to-face with wild Africa at its best, including an opportunity to hand-feed the Baringo giraffes at the end of your journey.
Kilimanjaro Safari Walkway weaves travelers through the park’s mountainous East Africa section. Explorers travel over a 70-foot suspension bridge to an observation deck that offers a remarkable 360-degree view of the park.
World Gardens and Aviaries: Over 500 California native plants, plus the Lorikeet Landing (feed colorful birds) and Butterfly Jungle (seasonal aviary with thousands of butterflies).
Children’s Activities
There is the Petting Kraal for the little ones, where kids can pet and feed goats, deer, and other small animals, such as the pack of amusing resident meerkats. There is also the Savanna Cool Zone for kids of all ages, an oasis of palm trees where you can cool off after a hot day of viewing wildlife.

Tips for Visiting
Best Time to Go: Weekdays or early mornings (arrive at opening) to beat crowds and heat—animals are most active then. Avoid midday summer (temps 80-90°F+); winter (Nov-Feb) is cooler and less crowded. Spring birthing season (March-May) is magical for newborns.
What to Bring: Sunscreen, hats, reusable water bottles (fountains available), comfortable walking shoes (expect 5+ miles), binoculars, and cameras. Pack layers for variable weather; no drones or large umbrellas.
Accessibility: Wheelchair-friendly with ramps, shuttles, and service animals welcome—contact guest services for accommodations.
Park Rules: Stay on paths for safety; no touching animals except in designated areas. Flash photography is discouraged. For families, kids 15 and under need adult supervision.

I have visited the park before and it is fabulous! Would like to return and enjoy the Safari. Would like to know if there is a lower rate time to visit. My lady friend and I were thinking of making a driving trip and take the Safari Park. Please send me information as to the dates and cost to enjoy. Thank you, Barbara Johnson
