Step Back in Time at This Century-Old Shields Date Garden
Just a short drive from Palm Springs, Shields Date Garden is a favorite spot that captures the spirit of the Coachella Valley. For over a hundred years, this historic place has kept its mid-century charm, from the well-known Knight’s Sign and 1950s buildings to the shady groves of date palms and citrus trees that offer a cool escape from the desert heat. The famous date shake, made with real date crystals, is a must-try, and visitors can also enjoy free samples of more than a dozen date varieties, many found only at Shields.
If you want a creamy, naturally sweet date shake or are interested in learning about the “romance and sex life” of dates (yes, that’s real), Shields offers a mix of nostalgia, tasty treats, and peaceful desert surroundings. It’s easy to find on Highway 111, open every day with no admission fee, and full of healthy and delicious experiences. Shields Date Garden offers a true taste of desert heritage, refreshing and memorable.
A Distinguished History and Legacy
Shields Date Garden started in 1924 as one of the first date farms in the area, just as the Coachella Valley was becoming known as America’s date capital. Floyd Shields, the founder, created unique varieties such as the “Blonde” and “Brunette” dates, which you can’t find anywhere else. The well-known building with the knight sign was built in 1953 and still has that classic mid-century roadside feel.
In the early 2000s, rising land prices nearly forced Shields to close, but The Jewel Date Company, based in nearby Thermal, purchased the property and saved it. Thanks to them, Shields has remained in its original location and preserved its traditions. The original location, groves, and spirit remain. Now, after more than a hundred years, Shields stands as a symbol of resilience, community, and the lasting love for fresh dates.
The grounds are filled with groves of date palms and citrus trees, along with landscaped areas featuring fountains, handmade statues, and seasonal flower displays for added color and decoration. The old nursery adds even more charm with its colorful plants.
What to Experience at Shields Date Garden
When you arrive, you’ll see the welcoming knight sign and step into a place full of date treats. Start at the soda fountain counter and try the signature date shake, a thick blend of date crystals (dehydrated dates) and vanilla ice cream. It’s considered one of the best in the desert and a must for anyone visiting Palm Springs.
You can try more than a dozen kinds of dates for free, from sweet Medjool and organic varieties to special types like Abbada, Barhi, Halawi, and the unique Blonde and Brunette. In the store, you’ll find fresh dates, gift boxes, date crystals, dried fruits, nuts, jams, candies, hot sauces, and citrus products. Souvenirs and healthy snacks make great take-home items.
Be sure to watch the free educational film in the original 1950s theater: “The Romance and Sex Life of the Date” (also called “The Romance of the Date”). Based on Mr. Shields’ talks, this fun and informative video explains how dates are pollinated and grown, sharing interesting facts in a retro style. It’s both educational and entertaining.
The 17-acre property is perfect for a relaxing walk among the date palm and citrus groves. There are shaded paths and plenty of great photo spots in the desert scenery.
The Café at Shields: Breakfast, Lunch, and More
Next to the store, The Café at Shields serves American and Mexican-style breakfast and lunch every day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with some longer hours at times. You can eat outside on the patio, where there’s often live music on weekends. The menu features fresh, high-quality ingredients that pair well with a date shake or citrus treat. The café also hosts private events, catering, and community dinners for local causes.
