Mercado González: Authentic Mexican Market and Food Hall
Visiting Mercado González Northgate Market in Costa Mesa feels like you’re in a lively part of Mexico, right here in Southern California. This isn’t your typical supermarket. It’s a big market and food hall that brings together Mexican culture, regional food, and a sense of community. Located at 2300 Harbor Blvd, this 70,000-square-foot spot opened in 2023 as the first Mercado González from the Northgate family. People come back for the food stalls, grocery options, and the lively atmosphere.
Mercado González Food Stalls
The market’s design is inspired by traditional Mexican mercados, but on a bigger scale. Inside, you’ll find over 20 food stalls, each offering different regional flavors. In one visit, you can try street-style tacos, slow-cooked pork, tortas, and sweets. The place gets especially busy later in the day, filled with the smells of grilled meat, fresh masa, and cinnamon sugar.
Popular Food Vendors at the Market
Tacos Los Guichos. This stall is always busy thanks to its street-style tacos on soft corn tortillas. You can choose from carne asada or the Zenteno family’s signature al pastor. Fresh salsas and toppings let you customize each taco.
Carnitas Don Miguel. Carnitas Don Miguel serves slow-cooked pork made the traditional Michoacán way. The pork cooks in big copper pots, turning out tender meat with crispy edges. You can order by the pound to eat there or take home. Many of their recipes come from Northgate’s founder.
Chiva Torta. Chiva Torta makes hearty Mexican sandwiches on crusty bolillo rolls. The meats are topped with avocado, beans, cheese, and salsa. These tortas can get messy, but they’re always tasty. The Albarran family uses the same style they had at their Santa Ana food truck.
El Moro, a famous churrería from Mexico City that’s been around since 1935, opened its first U.S. spot here. Their crispy churros come coated in cinnamon sugar and are served with seven kinds of hot chocolate, from sweet to spicy. The stand has its own entrance and is one of the market’s most popular stops.
Additional Stalls and Dining Options
You’ll also find stalls with mariscos, birria, tamales, guisados, and more. Casa Libre, which opened in 2026, roasts Mexican coffee on-site and serves café de olla and espresso drinks. Entre Nos, the bar, offers micheladas, mezcal, tequila, and Mexican beers, plus outdoor seating and sometimes live music or special events. The old Maizano fine-dining area now hosts other concepts, including brunch.
Produce, Meats, Breads, and More
The food stalls are inside a full supermarket. There’s a tortillería making fresh corn and flour tortillas all day. The carnicería has many cuts of meat, and the cremería is stocked with cheeses and creams. You’ll also find aguas frescas stands, a bakery, and a range of imported beers, tequilas, and mezcal. Shoppers can pick up dried chiles, beans, spices, and pantry basics. Handmade crafts and a flower stall are near the main walkways. Murals by Claudio Limón and the open layout make the space feel different from a regular grocery store.
Best Time to Visit
Mercado González is open every day. Hours are Sunday to Thursday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. (some stalls may open later or close earlier). There’s free parking in front, but it fills up fast on weekends. It gets crowded in the late afternoon and evening, so mornings are best for shorter lines and a quieter visit. Address: 2300 Harbor Blvd, Costa Mesa, CA 92626. Check the Northgate Market website for the latest hours and special events. Visit the Market website for more details.
Why Visit Mercado González?
Mercado González offers more than just groceries. You can have lunch at different stalls, shop for ingredients, and relax with a drink while enjoying live music on some weekends. The space is big enough for groups to split up and try different foods without leaving the building. If you’re visiting Orange County, it’s close to beaches, other Costa Mesa attractions, and freeways, making it easy to fit into your plans.
A second Mercado González opened in La Habra in late 2026, showing the concept’s popularity. Still, the Costa Mesa location is the biggest and most established.
Mercado González Costa Mesa is a lively spot for anyone looking for real Mexican flavors and market energy in one place. Come early, try a few food stalls, grab some fresh tortillas or produce, and see why the Northgate family took this idea beyond a regular supermarket.
